The Role
BLDG Memphis operates at the center of Memphis’ community development ecosystem, bringing together organizations, funders, public leaders, and community voices to drive investment and impact. The Executive Director will serve as BLDG Memphis’ primary leader, operator, and external representative, reporting to the Board of Directors and working closely with members, staff, funders, public officials, partners, and community leaders.
This role requires a leader who can balance field leadership, organizational management, and external influence — someone who can translate strategy into visible, on-the-ground progress by connecting stakeholders, resources, and execution across BLDG Memphis’ three core priorities: Strengthen, Advocate, and Activate.
We build the capacity of community development organizations through training, technical assistance, leadership development, and member support.
We advance equitable policies and public investments that support neighborhood revitalization, housing stability, mobility, safety, and community-centered development.
We support civic engagement, community voice, and on-the-ground action alongside members, residents, and partners.
12 – 24 Months
Establish clear alignment between the strategic plan, annual priorities, and day-to-day operations.
Strengthen BLDG Memphis' position as a trusted convener and voice within the community development sector.
Increase member engagement and demonstrate clear value across organizations at varying levels of capacity.
Advance at least one meaningful policy, funding, or systems-level initiative.
Ensure internal operations, team structure, decision-making, and financial management are consistent, disciplined, and sustainable.

External Leadership
Represent BLDG Memphis with funders, public officials, partners, and community leaders while positioning the organization as a central connector across sectors.
Member Engagement
Ensure programs and initiatives reflect the needs of member organizations, strengthen participation and retention, and support collaboration across the field.
Resource Development
Lead fundraising strategy in partnership with the Board and staff, maintain funder relationships, and align revenue strategy with long-term sustainability.
Team Leadership
Lead staff, establish clear roles and expectations, and oversee budgeting, financial management, and operational systems with discipline and transparency.
Board Partnership
Serve as a strategic partner to the Board, support strong governance practices, and maintain clear communication and operational boundaries.
